Summer classical music festivals bring heightened expectations for something different. Maybe it’s the pressing heat, or the later-setting sun, or that unrestrained summer feeling that makes you want to jump in the ocean and have a mimosa with your mid-morning omelet. Classical musicians everywhere rejoice at the prospect of kicking back, making music with friends, and bringing a community together through the performing arts.

Thankful for the Russians, Zander & BPYO
The last time Benjamin Zander programmed Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2, he balanced it on the bill with another heavyweight from 20th-century Russia, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. That was back in November 2012, with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and 17-year-old local phenomenon George Li as soloist. For the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra’s traditional post-Thanksgiving concert Sunday at Symphony Hall, Zander chose to pair the Rachmaninov with another great Shostakovich symphony, the Tenth.

Boston Conservatory student wins First place in Pappoutsakis Flute Competition
Boston Conservatory alumna Allison Parramore (M.M. '13, G.P.D., '16) was named first prize winner in the 35th Annual James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition on Sunday, January 25. Parramore performed Busoni at the competition, which took place at Boston University.
