Detroit Symphony Orchestra: Northern Lights Festival

  • Orchestra Hall, Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center 3711 Woodward Avenue Detroit, MI, 48201 United States (map)

Led by Principal Guest Conductor Tabita Berglund, the DSO’s Northern Lights Festival begins in Finland with Rautavaara’s pairing of orchestra with recorded birdsong, and Sibelius’s breathtaking, stormy Violin Concerto, featuring violinist Johan Dalene. Continuing to Berglund’s native Norway, Grieg’s incidental music to Ibsen’s Peer Gynt features some of the composer’s most iconic passages.

Program:

  • Einojuhani Rautavaara: Concerto For Birds and Orchestra, "Cantus Arcticus"

  • Jean Sibelius: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D minor

  • Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Prelude

  • Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No. 2

  • Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No. 1
